The Boston Red Sox had an odd night on Monday. Boston kicked off a four-game series against the Toronto Blue Jays with a loss at Rogers Centre. Boston has been the best team in baseball since the end of June, so seeing any loss at this point is pretty surprising. Monday's loss against the Blue Jays was the Red Sox's third straight defeat after dropping two against the Athletics as well. Boston lost 2-1. On paper, that doesn't sound strange, but the Red Sox's run was scored in one of the oddest ways you're ever going to see. The issue was that the players on the field — and the scoreboard — thought there were two outs, while there was one out. Anthony Seigler was at third base and went straight home. Nick Sogard was on first base and went on contact as well. The Blue Jays doubled Sogard up in the process. After the play, the umpires got together and had to determine whether Seigler's run counted. He went on contact and didn't tag up, but the Blue Jays also didn't throw to third base initially. It was a weird play and the Red Sox actually came out of it with the run. After the game, Seigler explained his thought process about the play and acknowledged that he saw the scoreboard had two outs, so he went on contact. "The ball was hit, I looked up as it was going to the outfield and I looked at the scoreboard, coincidentally. I saw two outs so I just took off. No excuse. It’s unacceptable," Seigler said, as transcribed by MassLive.com's Chris Cotillo. Again, it was one of the weirdest plays you're going to see on a Major League Baseball field. On the bright side, the Red Sox came away with a run. On the negative side, they were unable to get another one and suffered their third straight loss. Boston will have a shot to snap the streak on Wednesday night and will have some more firepower for the contest. Red Sox interim manager Chad Tracy shared that All-Star catcher Adley Rutschman will be activated and make his Boston debut on Tuesday night.
