When he extended his deal at the Bernabeu in 2022, negotiations went smoothly. With that contract expiring in June 2027, this time it has been very difficult.Here, informed by conversations with multiple sources close to the situation (who asked to speak anonymously to protect relationships), is the story of how Madrid and Vinicius Jr reached agreement — and how close Arsenal came to pulling off a stunning signing.Madrid’s leadership and Vinicius Jr’s representatives first began negotiating an extension at a meeting at the club’s training ground in January 2025.Having achieved several bonuses — including for winning FIFA’s award for the best player in the world 18 months ago, shortly after missing out on the Ballon d’Or — Vinicius Jr was earning about €18million (£15.4m; $20.7m at current rates) net per season. Madrid’s offer was to improve this to around €20m.Accompanied by two of his agents and his father, Vinicius Jr turned down the offer put forward by general manager Jose Angel Sanchez and chief scout Juni Calafat — perhaps the most influential figure in his €45million signing eight years ago.Weeks later, Madrid rejected a counterproposal put forward by the player’s side.Despite this, many media outlets in Spain reported that Vinicius Jr’s renewal was practically sealed that April. They operated carefully and effectively, with total commitment from the ownership to Berta and Arteta.All the key figures at the London club spoke at length with Vinicius Jr and his representatives to explain their project in depth and how the Brazilian would sit at its centre. Prestianni denied the allegation and was subsequently banned by UEFA and FIFA after admitting using a homophobic (rather than racist) slur against the Madrid forward.On the night, Mourinho suggested Vinicius Jr had incited the incident. Some key figures were in favour of selling Vinicius Jr if no agreement could be reached, fearing he might end up leaving for nothing.Aware of the whole picture, Arsenal were optimistic.On their side, everything was in place to go ahead if no agreement was reached between Madrid and Vinicius Jr. Right up until that August 5 meeting, Arsenal were confident the player’s decision could go their way.When news emerged that Madrid had made another improved offer to Vinicius Jr in those talks, it sent ripples through the Arsenal hierarchy. It was received as bad news — even if there had been no final decision, key figures suspected it meant he would extend.They were proved right. Vinicius Jr’s decision to stay at the Bernabeu was communicated to Arsenal last Wednesday by both the player and his representatives, who expressed their gratitude for the treatment they had received.They explained they were only turning Arsenal down because of Vinicius Jr’s affection for Real Madrid — and the Spanish club’s significant financial effort to retain him.
