The United Nations Children’s Fund has described birth registration as a child’s first and most fundamental right, saying it unlocks access to education, healthcare, social protection and lifelong opportunities.
UNICEF Chief of Lagos Field Office, Celine Lafoucriere, stated this on Tuesday in Lagos at a two-day media dialogue on birth registration.
The News Agency of Nigeria reports that the workshop, organised in collaboration with the National Population Commission (NPC), Lagos, has as its theme: “Giving Every Child a Legal Identity by Driving Birth Registration in Nigeria.”
The event brought together journalists from South-West states and Edo to strengthen media coverage of birth registration.
Lafoucriere said civil registration provided the legal identity every child needed to be recognised by the state.
