BIRMINGHAM — Just before the European Athletics Championships got under way in Birmingham, Amy Hunt cited a song from “High School Musical” to capture her goals for the event: “I want it all”.
The Team GB sprinter meant four gold medals: in the 100m and 200m along with the 4x100m and 4x400m relays.
On the first night of action at Alexander Stadium on Monday, the 24-year-old took her first big step towards that goal – and a giant leap forward in her career.
Hunt kept her calm, held her form and came from behind to power to the first major championship title of her career, clocking 11.00 seconds to deny Poland’s Ewa Swoboda (11.02).
As she beamed a bright smile a while later, the Cambridge University graduate in English literature admitted that she had “such a big premonition” that she would win gold in a stadium she knew so well, having competed here for over a decade, stretching back to her days as a teen sprint prodigy.
