The Government has announced a consultation on changing the drink-drive limit for the first time since 1967, describing it as a “turning point” in road safety.

It is part of a road safety strategy which will also consider compulsory eye tests for drivers over 70, a minimum learning period for new drivers, and measures such as alcolocks (which disable cars) or licence suspension for convicted drunk drivers.

In England and Wales, the limit currently stands at 35 micrograms (μg) of alcohol per 100ml of breath though new Government plans could reduce this to 22μg bringing these nations in line with Scotland, which lowered its limit in 2014.

(It is not possible to say how this translates to pints of beer or glasses of wine, as how much you can drink depends on your age, metabolism, gender and weight.)
