The Kano State Government has disclosed that it invested no less than N1.5bn in its latest mass wedding programme, provided 1,500 couples with financial assistance, household items and other support aimed at easing the cost of marriage and helping vulnerable residents establish new families.
The beneficiaries, comprising largely low-income residents, widows, divorcees, orphans, spinsters and bachelors, were formally married on Friday, August 7, 2026, in ceremonies coordinated by the Kano State Hisbah Board.
At the central ceremony held at the Emir’s Palace mosque, Governor Abba Kabir Yusuf represented the first groom, while the Emir of Kano, Muhammadu Sanusi II, represented the bride. The Chief Imam of Kano, Professor Sani Zahraddeen, offered prayers for the newly married couples.
Arewa PUNCH reports that the ceremony marked the second major mass wedding organised by the Yusuf administration, following the marriage of about 1,800 couples in 2023.
But beyond the colourful ceremony, the latest intervention was structured to address some of the financial and social challenges that prevent many residents from getting married.
