Rocket Lab has announced record revenue of US$234 million for its second quarter, up 62 percent from the same period last year.Despite the record revenue, Rocket Lab remained loss-making, posting a second-quarter net loss of US$49 million, compared with a loss of US$66 million a year earlier. The US-listed space company says its order backlog has reached a record of just under US$2.4 billion dollars.Rocket Lab founder and chief executive Sir Peter Beck said: "Q2 was another fantastic quarter for Rocket Lab, highlighted by record results and massive momentum that has continued well after the close."The company has recently signed a series of military contracts and is in the process of acquiring satellite communications operator Iridium, as it seeks to diversify its business from launches and rocket manufacturing into communication services. Its shares fell by about by 3 percent to around US$78 in after-hours trading.Looking ahead, Rocket Lab expects revenue in the current quarter to rise further to between US$250 million and US$265m, which would represent another record result if achieved. The company said it expected growth in both its launch and space systems divisions. The company said work on its medium-lift Neutron rocket remained on track, with production of the first-stage tank aligned with plans to deliver the rocket to the launch pad in the final quarter of this year.Rocket Lab is also pursuing a major strategic shift through its proposed acquisition of satellite communications operator Iridium, a deal it says would allow it to build, launch and operate its own satellite constellations and expand into communications and other space-based services.
