An “Englishman” cable dated London, August 8, says:-“The Daily Mail” says the latest scientific instruments exhibited at the meetings of the British Association bring nearer the discovery of the source of life, and a new source of power with a trigger to set it off and a boiler to control it. Some scientists foresee the day when an engine will be driven from London to Edinburgh on a handful of cobblestones. This year’s meetings of the Association show that women are participating more in scientific inquiry, but they are better analysts than creators.Perhaps the most curious feature of the sectional meetings has been Professor Macdougall’s demonstration of the intelligence of rats, which can move fourteen different catches separating them from food locked in a box. Professor Macdougall believes that rats have intelligence similar to man’s and that the intellectuality of later generations of them can be increased, but the general view will probably be that rats are cunning enough already.
