Diehard “Harry Potter” fans forced the relocation of high-voltage, undersea cables between the U.K. and Ireland so it wouldn’t pass through the site of Dobby’s fictional grave, one of the people managing the energy project revealed on a podcast last week.Simon Ludlam, founder of Etchea Energy, said on Wednesday’s episode of “The Energy Revolution” podcast that the Greenlink interconnector, a 125-mile submarine power cable that connects the U.K. and Ireland, ruffled feathers when it was revealed in 2018 it was going to make landfall at Freshwater West, a beach in Wales where the beloved elf character was laid to rest in the 2010 film adaptation.After he shot a segment for BBC where he explained how the interconnectors would work, Ludlam said Etchea Energy received hundreds of calls from “Harry Potter” fans complaining that the interconnectors would disrupt Dobby’s grave on Freshwater West, where fans of the franchise have built a memorial for Dobby on the beach after his burial was filmed there. The memorial features rocks that read “Here Lies Dobby A Free Elf,” as well as socks, a nod to the item that frees Dobby at the end of “Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets.” Ludlam, who said he initially didn’t know who Dobby was, said his colleague told him the complaints were “very, very serious.”“And it was serious,” Ludlam said on the podcast. “It was serious.”A memorial for Dobby at Freshwater West beach Pembrokeshire, Wales. The project was completed in 2025. “The project’s now going and Dobby’s happy,” Ludlam said. “I think you’ve got to be flexible, agile and thoughtful. And sometimes, a 10-year-old girl ― she’s right.”Dobby, the house elf in the “Harry Potter” book and film series, died in the final book, “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows,” while helping Harry and others escape Malfoy Manor. The filming location for Dobby’s burial, which takes place in the eighth film, is at Freshwater West. In 2022, the National Trust conducted a survey and concluded that Dobby’s grave could remain on the beach, but they asked visitors to not leave any more items.“The trust is asking visitors to only take photos,” the National Trust said, according to BBC. “Items like socks, trinkets, and paint chips from painted pebbles could enter the marine environment and food chain and put wildlife at risk.”
