Outlander star Caitríona Balfe will team with Alfonso Cauron on her next series project.

Apple TV has placed a series order for Ascension, a thriller that Cuarón is executive producing and writing along with co-showrunners Natalie Erika James and Christian White (Apartment 7A) and Carlos Cuarón. James will also be the lead director.

Ascension will star Balfe in her first series since Outlander ended its eight-season run on Starz. She will play Rose, a documentary filmmaker and recently divorced mother who begins researching a 20th century cult known as the Church of Ascension. “She finds unexpected refuge in its teachings — until she discovers something far more insidious beneath,” the show’s logline reads. “Ascension explores evil and innocence at the highest level, while asking how far we’ll go, and what we’ll sacrifice, to protect the ones we love, even when the greatest threat to them may be ourselves.”

The series is inspired by the novel Last Days by Adam Nevill. Ascension comes from Apple Studios, with Anonymous Content producing.
