Summer 2026 brought a steady run of food recalls across the United States, spanning everything from a deadly, years-long listeria outbreak tied to soft cheese to a fraud case involving dog food that was supposed to be destroyed. The causes varied widely, including bacterial contamination, undeclared allergens, stray metal fragments and at least one case of products slipping past required government inspection.

Some of these recalls stemmed from active outbreaks investigated by the CDC and FDA, with confirmed illnesses, hospitalizations and, in one case, a death. Others were precautionary, issued after a supplier flagged a possible contamination risk before anyone got sick. Together, they touched nearly every part of the grocery store, from dairy and produce to snacks, pet food and prepared meals.
