EU Denies Rejecting INEC Invitation, Confirms Electoral Expert Mission for 2027 Polls

The European Union (EU) Delegation to Nigeria and ECOWAS has dismissed reports that it rejected an invitation from the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to observe Nigeria’s 2027 general election, describing the reports as inaccurate and speculative.
The EU, in a statement issued in Abuja on Monday, said it had received a formal invitation from INEC dated April 17, 2026, to deploy observers for the 2027 elections.
Contrary to reports that the EU had declined the invitation citing worsening insecurity and alleged hostile treatment of its observers and officials following the publication of its final report on the 2023 general election, the delegation said it had accepted the invitation and would deploy an Electoral Expert Mission (EEM).
