Hundreds of people gathered in Co Wexford on Monday for the funeral of a 16-year-old girl who died suddenly during a Gaelic football match last week. Aoibheann Clarke was remembered as a talented sportsperson as well as a “fantastic” daughter, sister, granddaughter and friend.Aoibheann died during a ladies football match when playing for her club Taghmon/Camross against Ferns. Mourners wept as her cortege arrived at St Garvan’s Church for the funeral Mass, with a guard of honour provided by All Blacks AFC, Wexford FC and her Taghmon-Camross clubmates. The church was filled to overflowing, with many more gathered outside as parish priest Fr Robert Maguire spoke of the entire community being in shock. He said locals were rallying behind the Clarke family and would continue to do so over the coming weeks and months. Symbols representing Aoibheann’s life were brought to the altar. They included a medal, which was representative of her winning the All-Ireland U19 title with Wexford FC, a source of great pride for her. Maguire spoke about how much of Aoibheann’s short life had been dedicated to sport. “We all knew she was a talented sportsperson not just in [Gaelic] football, but also in soccer where she won her U19 medal. “She was full of love with a great sense of humour. She was a beautiful child with a full life ahead of her but so tragically taken away from us. I recall visiting the school and Aoibheann was always one of those present. Her family, classmates, teammates all have lovely memories of her. “When they look at the photographs of her, they will see how Aoibheann had brought brightness to the world, for people all over the county and outside have paid tribute to her.” A family member told the congregation: ”We’ll all miss her, as she was a fantastic daughter, sister, granddaughter.A memorial for Aoibheann Clarke at Croke Park on Sunday before the All-Ireland Senior Camogie Championship final between Cork and Galway. She had a heart of gold, and we’ll always talk and will have cherished memories of Aoibheann.“You brought so much happiness to us. We are massively proud of you.” Hundreds followed the cortege from the church to Kilgarvan Cemetery where Aoibheann was laid to rest. A minute’s silence was observed before all games over the weekend, including a minute’s silence before the All-Ireland senior camogie final at Croke Park on Sunday.
