Lithuania may seek amendments to the European Union’s new Migration and Asylum Pact during its 2027 presidency of the EU Council, Interior Minister Martynas Katelynas said Monday, citing concerns about border security and recent migration incidents.
“There are many issues to consider. We will evaluate how the Migration and Asylum Pact is functioning, as it only entered into force on June 12 this year, if I am not mistaken,” Katelynas told reporters at the Lithuanian parliament.
The minister said one of the main concerns was that the pact could limit the ability of border authorities to operate effectively at the EU’s external borders.
“We saw this in Spain. However, the Spaniards took measures regardless when facing the tens of thousands who flooded Ceuta,” Katelynas said.
He argued that the pact should not prevent EU member states from taking measures to protect their security.
