Veolia has become the first organisation in the UK to trial a next-generation, non-amine carbon capture technology at an energy-from-waste facility.
The trial is taking place at the Sheffield Energy Recovery Facility, where the company processes household and commercial waste to generate power.
Carbon capture and storage (CCS) is a family of technologies designed to trap carbon dioxide from industrial exhaust gases before it reaches the atmosphere.
Most commercial CCS systems rely on amine-based solvents, a form of chemical compound that binds to CO₂.
The problem with amine-based products is the amount of energy needed to create and regenerate them, as well as their tendency to degrade over time.
