The Government plans to reduce the prevalence of non-communicable diseases by 5 per cent under the second Pathway for the Development of Samoa.
The target is contained in the pathway’s Monitoring, Evaluation and Learning Framework and Reference Sheet for the financial years 2026/27 to 2030/31.
Diabetes, hypertension or high blood pressure, cancer, overweight and obesity are grouped under the framework’s non-communicable disease indicator.
The framework lists 2023 baseline figures of 1,503 for diabetes and 1,075 for hypertension. However, it does not clearly state whether these figures represent diagnosed cases, population rates or another measure. Cancer is recorded at 233 per 100,000 people, while overweight and obesity are listed at 551.8 per 1,000 people.
The Ministry of Health is responsible for monitoring progress using its Patient Information System database, Health Sector Plan reviews and health statistical bulletins.
