After his acting career, Jones served as a US House of Representatives member for Georgia's fourth district from 1989, winning re-election once before losing his seat. Tributes were paid by his Dukes of Hazzard co-star Tom Wopat, who described Jones as a "fine friend and a fierce advocate".
