Nikos Kalogeropoulos, a prominent actor whose career spanned film, television and theater and who also worked as a director, screenwriter, poet and songwriter, has died at 74.

Kalogeropoulos died Sunday at Kyparissia General Hospital in western Messinia, in the southwestern Peloponnese, where he had been hospitalized in recent days. He had been battling cancer in recent years, according to local reports.

Born in 1952 in Filiatra, a town in southwestern Messinia, Kalogeropoulos studied at the theater school of Kostis Michailidis in Athens. His first play, “O Baboulas,” was staged at Athens’ Kava Theater in 1976.

He made his television debut in 1975 in an adaptation of Nikos Kazantzakis’ novel “Christ Recrucified” and went on to appear in numerous television series.

His film career began in 1980 and included collaborations with some of Greece’s leading contemporary directors, including Nikos Perakis, Thodoros Marangos, Kostas Ferris and Nikos Zapatinas.
