Michigan Democratic Senate candidate Abdul El-Sayed clapped back at President Donald Trump Sunday for mocking him and his wife, Sarah Jukaku, on social media. In a post Saturday on Truth Social, Trump took aim at El-Sayed by juxtaposing an image of himself and first lady Melania Trump alongside a photo of El-Sayed and his wife, who wore a hijab. Above the photos, a caption read “Two VERY DIFFERENT America’s.” Trump’s name also appeared over the photo of him and the first lady, while El-Sayed’s full name, Abdulrahman Mohamed El-Sayed, was displayed over the photo of himself and his wife.Trump has repeatedly used El-Sayed’s full name in public attacks, similarly to the way he frequently uses former President Barack Obama’s middle name, Hussein, in a way that experts say could be “a dog-whistle to encourage Islamophobia, xenophobia and racism” to his political supporters. While appearing on “State of the Union” Sunday, El-Sayed was asked for his reaction to Trump’s post. “Yeah, he’s right,” El-Sayed said. “One in which your overlords are two people who don’t like each other but joined in the interest of making billions of dollars off of you – or two people who genuinely love each other, enjoyed some pancakes together, want to come together to build the kind of America where they can raise a family, and know that that family is going to have the good things.” El-Sayed also took a dig at Trump’s marriage. “Actually, Sar and I like each other. I don’t know about the first lady and the president, but from what I’ve heard, it’s a bit of a rocky road,” he told CNN’s Jake Tapper. El-Sayed then called into question Trump’s repeated claims that the economy was booming under his second presidency. “So yes, you’ve got two different visions of America,” he said. “Donald Trump’s vision is the one you’re living in right now. Can you afford your gas? Can you afford your groceries? Do you believe, when you look your kids in the eye, that they’re going to have a better future than you did?” While Trump has dubbed himself “the affordability president,” the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development forecasted in March that inflation will rise above 4% in the U.S. this year, mostly due to Trump’s ongoing war on Iran. Inflation was at a 3% rate when his predecessor, former President Joe Biden, left office in 2025.El-Sayed added that he and his wife want their daughters, Emmalee and Serene, to “believe that they’re every bit as able to have a better future than the one that they could have had under the Trump administration.” “I want them to live in an America where they can breathe clean air and drink clean water,” he said.
