Algeria has donated four military helicopters, including attack aircraft, to Niger, strengthening Niamey’s combat capabilities as the North African power deepens ties with the Russia-backed Alliance of Sahel States amid a wider global push by countries to forge new military alliances.
Algeria’s Ministry of National Defence confirmed on August 9, 2026, that the package included four helicopters alongside ammunition, spare parts, maintenance equipment and logistical support for the Nigerien Armed Forces.
The fleet comprises two Mi-24 SuperHind attack helicopters and two Mi-171 transport helicopters, strengthening Niger’s military capabilities as Niamey confronts persistent attacks by armed groups across the central Sahel.
Algeria and Niger restore defence ties
The donation also underscores a broader improvement in relations between Algeria and Niger following months of tension between Algiers and members of the Alliance of Sahel States.
