Faf de Klerk produced a moment of late magic to break Stormers XXIII hearts, scoring in the corner with the last play to snatch a dramatic 31-26 victory for the Cheetahs at Athlone Stadium on Sunday.
The Free State side kept their nerve through a frantic finale, patiently stringing together more than 20 phases before finally finding the gap for De Klerk to finish the job. In a chaotic Currie Cup battle littered with yellow cards, the Cheetahs had to come from behind before landing the final blow.
Their hosts will be kicking themselves. They scored what looked like the winner through loose forward Wandi Mlaba, his second of the clash, but playing with 14 men for the final 10 minutes, the Cheetahs attacked sharply, looking for the winner to keep them in the hunt for first place in the Currie Cup.
They are currently second and level with Griquas on 16 points, with the defending champions boasting a better points difference.
