More than 1,900 small high-street entities, including mini-marts, vape shops, barber shops, and car washes, still retain licenses to sponsor overseas workers under the Skilled Worker Visa scheme in the United Kingdom (UK).
These entities remain in the loop despite significant policy revisions aimed at restricting foreign labour recruitment to high-earning graduate roles.
A recent analysis by BBC Verify reveals that over 1,500 convenience stores, 150 taxi operators, 100 barber shops, and dozens of car washes and vape vendors remain on the government’s official sponsor register.

While holding a license does not guarantee individual visa approvals, legal experts and immigration analysts warn that some firms may seek to exploit administrative loopholes by misrepresenting low-skilled high-street positions as specialised administrative or managerial roles.
