As many as 949 motorists were caught driving under the influence of alcohol in special enforcement drives conducted by the traffic police in Hyderabad, Cyberabad and Malkajgiri commissionerate limits over the weekend, with two-wheeler riders accounting for nearly 80% of the offenders.While Hyderabad Traffic Police caught 421 drivers during a two-day special drive on August 7 and 8, Cyberabad Traffic Police apprehended 311 offenders during the same period and Malkajgiri Traffic Police caught 217 motorists between August 2 and 8.Of the combined 949 cases, 759 involved two-wheelers, 61 three-wheelers, 127 four-wheelers and two heavy vehicles. The figures underline the continuing prevalence of drunk riding among two-wheeler users, who accounted for about four out of every five offenders.In Hyderabad, 344 of the 421 offenders were two-wheeler riders, 37 were driving three-wheelers and 40 were in four-wheelers or other vehicles. Their blood alcohol concentration (BAC) levels ranged from 30 mg/100 ml to above 300 mg/100 ml.In Cyberabad, 238 of the 311 offenders were two-wheeler riders, followed by 56 four-wheeler drivers, 16 three-wheeler drivers and one heavy-vehicle driver. As many as 255 offenders had BAC levels between 36 and 200 mg/100 ml.Malkajgiri Traffic Police, which conducted its drive from August 2 to 8, apprehended 177 two-wheeler riders, eight three-wheeler drivers, 31 four-wheeler drivers and one heavy-vehicle driver. Of the 217 offenders, 205 had BAC levels between 36 and 200 mg/100 ml.The enforcement figures also came alongside hundreds of drunk-driving cases being disposed of by courts. In Malkajgiri, 265 cases were disposed of during the week, with six respondents receiving both a fine and jail term, 25 being sentenced to social service along with a fine, and 234 were fined.In Cyberabad, 283 drunk-driving cases were disposed of between August 3 and 8. One person was awarded jail term along with a fine, 11 were ordered to pay a fine and perform social service, while 271 were fined.The traffic police said special drives would continue and urged commuters to cooperate with enforcement personnel.
