A Qatar Airways Boeing 777 and Jetstar A320 came into close proximity while taxiing at Sydney Airport, forcing the Jetstar pilots to brake sharply.

A ground controller and tug operator were stood down and will undergo mandatory drug and alcohol testing as the ATSB investigates.

The incident was the second near-miss at Sydney Airport in a week, following a Qantas runway crossing incident.

The incidents come amid air traffic control staffing shortages that contributed to more than 150 flight delays on Saturday.
