Typhoon Dolphin is expected to make landfall along the coast of Zhejiang province around dusk on Sunday, prompting Shanghai to cancel over 80 per cent of flights to and from the metropolis on Sunday.The typhoon is expected to make landfall around the cities of Yuhuan and Wenling in Zhejiang, according to state broadcaster CCTV.China’s National Meteorological Centre issued a red alert for Typhoon Dolphin at 10am on Sunday, when the centre of the storm was over the southern East China Sea, about 215km (134 miles) east of Wenzhou, Zhejiang.The typhoon is projected to move towards the west and northwest, gradually weakening after making landfall.In the coming days, rain and wind will intensify across eastern China. Both Zhejiang and Shanghai are located within the “dangerous semicircle” of the typhoon, where wind and rain are expected to be at their strongest, according to Weather China on Sunday.As of 2.20pm on Sunday, Shanghai’s two main airports had scrapped over 80 per cent of their daily flights – more than 2,230 cancellations in total – and more than 720 were called off for Monday.Meanwhile, Hangzhou Xiaoshan International Airport grounded over 500 flights on Sunday and pulled more than 180 scheduled for Monday, according to flight data provider VariFlight.
