As more South Africans choose to live together instead of marrying, financial experts are warning that many women remain vulnerable when relationships end, particularly if they have sacrificed earnings, career progression or retirement savings along the way.
Moving in together is often seen as a milestone in a relationship, but financial experts say it can also become one of the biggest risks women face if the relationship ends without proper planning.
Sharon Hamman, senior legal adviser at Momentum, warned that women are often more likely to make financial sacrifices during a relationship that can have lasting consequences.
Those sacrifices can include taking career breaks to raise children, reducing working hours, supporting a partner’s career or contributing to a household in ways that do not necessarily translate into financial security if the relationship comes to an end, desktop research shows.
