Thousands of Nigerians living in the United Kingdom rely on the Nigerian High Commission in London for essential consular services. But for many, what should be a routine passport renewal has turned into a frustrating ordeal marked by months of delays, unanswered enquiries, missed travel plans and lingering uncertainty. “If my passport isn’t renewed, I can’t travel outside the UK. If I leave with an expired passport, I could get stranded or face serious immigration problems. That could affect my immigration status, and I don’t want that.”
Those were the words of Badmus Oluwaseun (not his real name), a Nigerian social worker based in Bournemouth, United Kingdom, whose attempt to renew his passport has turned into months of anxiety and frustration.
What he expected to be a routine process through the Nigerian High Commission in London instead became a bureaucratic nightmare marked by unanswered emails, ignored telephone calls, an expensive but fruitless trip to London and the growing fear that his passport would expire before the problem was resolved.
