— Hayes Fawcett (@Hayesfawcett3) August 8, 2026Bringing in a five-star quarterback is always a massive win. For Ohio State coach Ryan Day, in this case it’s a fellow New England native. Day grew up in Manchester, N.H., which is just a one-hour ride to Danvers, Mass., where Vargas plays his high school football at St. John’s Prep. The 6-foot-4, 195-pound Vargas threw 24 touchdowns and just two interceptions as a sophomore last year.Vargas is the second five-star high school quarterback to commit to Day in the past four cycles. Tavien St. Clair, an Ohio native and five-star in 2025, is entering his sophomore year as the backup to Julian Sayin. Ohio State has a commitment from four-star quarterback Brady Edmunds in the 2027 class, which will sign this fall.Ohio State could team Vargas with elite weapons like Harrison, the brother of former Ohio State star Marvin Harrison Jr., and Newman-Hall. The 2028 class is just getting started, though, as the Buckeyes are expected to pursue a number of other five-star prospects like wide receiver Brysen Wright and edge Jermaine Smith.Saturday marked a strong move by the Buckeyes, who seem to want to get a hold on the 2028 class early and let players like Vargas and Harrison do some recruiting behind the scenes. As long as Ohio State can hold on to both Vargas and Harrison, this weekend’s news could make Ohio State a contender for the No. 1 class in 2028.
