The Five Principles, called Artha Panchakam, are the core teachings that every seeker of liberation should know. Sri Desika Srinivasa Thathachariar said in a discourse that understanding them is necessary before a person can receive initiation into the Rahasya Trayam, the three sacred secrets, from a spiritual teacher known as Acharya. As seekers move towards liberation, the Acharya offers guidance and support. The first principle is Para Svarupa, the nature of the Supreme Being. Sriman Narayana is the Supreme Brahman. He is eternal, unchanging, and the very embodiment of knowledge (jnana). He alone is the ultimate cause, sustainer, and ruler of the entire universe. The second principle, Jiva Svarupa, addresses the nature of the individual soul. The soul is distinct from the body, mind, and senses. Its essential nature is to serve as the eternal servant (sesha) of the Lord. The third principle is Upaya Svarupa, the essential nature of the means to attain the Supreme Lord. The way to liberation includes Siddhopaya, the already achieved means consisting of the Lord Himself, and Sadhyopaya, the means the seeker should practice, such as Bhakti Yoga or Prapatti (Saranagati). The fourth principle is Phala Svarupa, which describes the ultimate goal. When a soul is liberated, it goes to Sri Vaikuntha, leaves behind its subtle body, regains eight divine qualities, and enjoys the happiness of serving the Lord forever in His divine home. The fifth and final principle is Virodhi Svarupa, the nature of obstacles that prevent liberation. These arise from past karmas, forbidden actions, and failing to perform prescribed duties. By understanding these five principles under the guidance of an Acharya, a seeker progresses towards moksha and eternal service at the lotus feet of Lord Vishnu.
