Over 1,000 families in Thiruvalluvar Nagar in the R.K. Nagar Assembly constituency, under Tondiarpet Zone of Greater Chennai Corporation, plan to stage a road blockade on August 31 to protest severe drinking water shortages, a dilapidated overhead tank and sewage stagnation in the area.The residents’ association of the Tamil Nadu Housing Board colony, which has over 300 houses, held an executive committee meeting where the decision to stage the protest was taken in the presence of D.K. Shanmugam, president of the Federation of North Chennai Residents Welfare Associations (FNCRWA).According to Mr. Shanmugam, residents have been facing difficulties in getting adequate drinking water. The overhead tank intended to serve the locality has a storage capacity that is insufficient even for half the families living in the colony, he said.The tank is also in a dilapidated condition and is at risk of collapsing.
