The Treasury said the action forms part of the Trump administration's "maximum economic pressure" policy against Iran under National Security Presidential Memorandum 2 (NSPM-2).
The United States has imposed fresh sanctions on multiple cryptocurrency exchanges, companies and an individual accused of helping Iran's government launder billions of dollars, evade international sanctions and finance the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC), as Washington intensifies its economic pressure campaign against Tehran.
The sanctions, announced by the U.S. Department of the Treasury's Office of Foreign Assets Control (OFAC), target two digital asset exchanges allegedly used by Iran, alongside a multinational network of front companies accused of facilitating illicit cryptocurrency transactions for the Iranian government.
According to the Treasury Department in a statement published on its website, Iranian authorities have increasingly relied on cryptocurrency platforms and shadow financial networks to maintain covert access to the global financial system while supporting the IRGC and other designated terrorist organisations.
"The Iranian regime's reliance on digital assets and shadow banking networks is further evidence that Economic Fury is working," U.S. Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent said in a statement.
