Water tourism is enjoying a surge in popularity in Lithuania, with both domestic travellers and foreign visitors increasingly choosing holidays built around the country’s thousands of lakes and rivers.
According to the national tourism promotion agency Travel Lithuania, about 60% of Lithuanians spend their summer vacations near lakes, rivers or the Baltic Sea.
“Water tourism is becoming increasingly popular around the world,” said Jolanta Masiulienė, a representative of Travel Lithuania. “People no longer want just to swim. They want to be on the water, travel on the water and experience it.”
Lithuania offers plenty of opportunities to do just that. The country is home to more than 3,000 lakes and roughly twice as many rivers, supporting activities ranging from kayaking and paddleboarding to recreational diving and nighttime excursions.
