The Samoa Fire and Emergency Services Authority (SFESA) responded to a bushfire affecting forested areas around Samalaeulu and Puapua on Saturday, as dry conditions and strong winds increased the risk of the fire spreading rapidly.
SFESA Commissioner Tanuvasa Oloapu Petone Mauga issued a public warning urging people in the affected areas to avoid burning vegetation or rubbish while firefighters continue responding to the blaze.
"Please do not burn vegetation or rubbish at this time. Fires can quickly spread and threaten lives, homes, property and the environment," Tanuvasa.
The authority has also called on village councils from Puapua, Samalaeulu, Patamea and Saleaula through to Itu-o-Tane to remain vigilant and stop people from burning rubbish or vegetation to clear land for plantations.
SFESA warned that fires lit for land clearing or rubbish disposal could quickly get out of control because of the current dry and windy conditions, putting nearby communities and the wider public at risk.
