TORONTO — Leylah Fernandez’s run at the Canadian Open isn’t done yet.The Canadian trounced Mirra Andreeva, the world No. 5 and French Open champion, in straight sets 6-1, 6-4, Friday afternoon to advance to the round of 16. After losing in the first round a year ago in Montreal, her birthplace, Fernandez has now matched her best result at the Canadian Open.Fernandez started fast against Andreeva. After both players held serve, Fernandez rattled off five consecutive games to take the opening set in 31 minutes. The 23-year-old was 13 of 13 on first-serve points, controlling the rallies while Andreeva piled up unforced errors. On set point, Fernandez served up the T, and Andreeva blasted a forehand long, giving Fernandez the set. She fist-pumped as the Canadian supporters inside Sobeys Stadium roared in approval.

When she returned, Fernandez’s domination continued, breaking Andreeva to start the second set as the No. 5 seed’s serve continued to falter. Not only was Fernandez hitting her groundstrokes deep, but she was also mixing up her shots. In the third game of the second set, Fernandez connected on a forehand return down the line for the winner. Then she showcased a nifty drop shot, bringing Andreeva forward for a return attempt that resulted in another unforced error. Fernandez took a commanding double-break lead, while giving very little to Andreeva.
