According to the government, preliminary findings showed that the violence erupted after an unarmed herder was allegedly shot dead by a member of a local vigilante group on suspicion of cattle rustling.
The Kogi State Government has condemned the deadly reprisal attack on Abugi, Kuchinda and Mikugi communities in Lokoja Local Government Area, where several residents were killed, vowing that all those responsible will be arrested and prosecuted.
The government described the killings as "tragic, senseless and unacceptable," assuring residents of Kupa Kingdom that security agencies had been directed to restore peace and bring the perpetrators to justice.
The assurance was contained in a statement issued on Wednesday by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Kingsley Femi Fanwo, who conveyed Governor Ahmed Usman Ododo's condolences to the families of those killed and the people of Kupa Kingdom.
