WARNING - GRAPHIC IMAGE: Jason Franklin was watching From Paris with Love with his partner at their home in Bristol when intruders opened fire and shot him17:07, 07 Aug 2026A dad was left with gruesome injuries after he was shot in the head by gang members who got the wrong house.‌Jason Franklin, 42, had been enjoying a quiet night in with his partner Keela, 36, and their son Lucas, then just five months old, when intruders attempted to break down their front door before shooting him through the glass door panel.‌The dad-of-four from Bristol, was left with a hole in his head and shards of glass in his eyes, and still has more than 100 pieces of shrapnel in his forehead. It is said police told Jason he had got caught in the crossfire of a war between rival gangs, who had mistakenly turned up at his property, thinking it belonged to someone else.‌The fencer, who has since not able to work due to mental health struggles, said: "I'm devastated that the people who did this to me were never caught. The lasting damage that it's had on my mental health has been horrible."I think it's terrible that there's been no repercussions at all. I've got PTSD, anxiety, depression; it's really affected Lucas as I wasn't able to take him out to places when he was growing up, due to my mental health. We've not been able to live like a normal family."‌On the evening of Sunday, April 4, 2010, Jason and Keela were snuggled up on the sofa, in their home in Bristol, watching From Paris with Love, whilst Lucas, now 16, slept in the pram next to them. It was Easter Sunday, and Jason, who usually went to bed early, had decided to stay up later than usual, as he had the bank holiday Monday off work.At around 10 pm, Keela went upstairs to put Lucas in his cot, before returning downstairs, whilst Jason drifted in and out of sleep on the sofa. Half an hour later, Jason was woken up with a start, at the sound of a banging noise.‌"It sounded like someone was kicking the door down", he said. Confused, Jason raced to the front door and pressed his body against it to try and stop the intruders from entering the property."I had no idea whatsoever who it could be", he said. "I was so scared, I didn't know why anyone would want to try and break into my house."‌Suddenly, there was a loud bang, and a smell of smoke. The glass panels in the front door had been shattered by a bullet, which hit Jason in the top of the head."The intruders couldn't get through the door, so they decided to just shoot through the glass", Jason said. "Weirdly, I wasn't in any pain at all".Jason's head began to pour with blood, and he raced upstairs to grab a towel to press onto his head, leaving bloody handprints all over the walls. Keela immediately called 999, and the intruders ran away from the property.‌Jason was rushed to the hospital, where he had 10 stitches to close up the wound, and an operation to remove shards of glass from the front door from his eyes. "When they shot me in the head, it damaged the nerve, so I couldn't feel much, but my eyes were in so much pain", he said.Police investigating the shooting told Jason and Keela that the attackers had used a homemade bullet, which had shattered on impact, leaving Jason with 100 pieces of shrapnel in his forehead.‌"Doctors said it would make the scarring worse if they tried to take them out", Jason said. "You can still feel little bits of metal if you touch my head in certain places."Police explained that they believed the attack was part of a dispute between rival gangs, who had got the wrong house, and mistakenly shot Jason."They (the gang members) didn't do their research; they were just told to go to the house next to the boarded-up house, but they got the wrong side", he said.‌After five days, Jason was discharged from the hospital and went to stay at his mum's house, where Keela and Lucas were already staying."Mum lived down the road, literally four doors down from where the shooting happened, so it was really scary going back there", Jason said. "I was scared that something else could happen to me or my family".Article continues belowTwo months later, the family moved into a two-bed flat on the other side of Bristol, which helped them to feel much safer. However, by the end of the year, the police had closed the case, as they had exhausted all lines of enquiry, leaving Jason devastated.The dad of four's mental health has been extremely badly affected by the random attack, and in the years after, Jason struggled to leave the house because of his PTSD. "I'm still unwell to this day; sometimes I struggle to play with my sons and take them out to certain places", he said.The Mirror has contacted Avon and Somerset Police for comment.
