A judge has directed the preparation of a report from a psychologist in advance of the sentencing hearing of a teenager convicted of the murder of a man who was found in a pool of blood outside his Co Cork home last year.Judge Siobhan Lankford said it was important to assess the “maturity level” of the boy (17) and another boy (16) who entered a plea of guilty to manslaughter during the course of the trial. Barry Daly suffered catastrophic head and facial injuries and died after he was attacked with a golf club in the driveway of his home at Rockview Terrace in Doneraile on October 12th, 2025. A 17-year-old boy was found guilty in late July of the murder of the 44-year-old postman following a retrial at the Central Criminal Court, sitting in Cork. The unanimous guilty verdict was returned after a jury deliberated for close to 7½ hours. His conviction followed that of Alex Deady of Glenview, Convent Road in Doneraile. On July 3rd a jury deliberated for close to 12 hours before convicting the 21-year-old of the murder of Daly.His 16-year-old co-accused entered a plea of guilty to manslaughter in the course of the trial. The plea was found to be acceptable to the Director of Public Prosecutions. On Friday, the two teenagers appeared at a sitting of the Central Criminal Court in Cork via video link from Oberstown Children’s Detention Campus. The judge directed that assessment, consultation and therapy services reports be compiled in relation to both young men.She also extended legal aid to facilitate psychologists in preparing two separate reports about the juveniles. The teenagers will be produced in person at Cork Central Criminal Court on August 31st next to allow evidence to be heard prior to sentencing. However, the judge said that sentencing won’t be finalised in relation to the two young men on that date as she needs time to consider reports. Alex Deady will also appear in court in Cork on August 31st. The judge previously indicated that Deady will be sentenced on that date. Daly died of catastrophic head injuries which were inflicted with a golf club. Jurors were told that the broken head of a golf club was discovered in the garden of the deceased. The day before the murder, Doneraile’s local GAA team had won the north Cork Junior B hurling championship and locals had been out celebrating. Daly had attended the celebrations in Eily’s Bar in the town. The evidence was that Daly hit the girlfriend of Alex Deady on the street after the pub closed for the night. Several witnesses said Daly’s striking of the young woman was accidental, but whether it was deliberate or not was contested throughout the two trials. In his Garda interviews, Deady said he was “fuming” that his girlfriend “got a belt”.The evidence was that Daly was subsequently struck in the head with a golf club outside his home. He had no offensive or defensive injuries.
