Britain’s Conservative Party, led by British-Nigerian politician Kemi Badenoch, has pledged to bar most foreign nationals from social housing in England if it returns to power, escalating an immigration debate that could affect thousands of African and other non-European residents.
Under the proposal, foreign nationals would be excluded from new social housing tenancies, while some existing tenants would have six months to leave their homes.
The Conservatives estimate the policy could free up 228,144 properties for British families, with about 1.34 million households currently on social housing waiting lists in England.
The move comes as Conservative leader Kemi Badenoch toughens her party’s stance on migration while competing with Nigel Farage’s Reform UK for voters concerned about immigration.
