The General Industries Workers Union of South Africa (GIWUSA) has condemned eMedia's planned retrenchment of 171 eNCA employees.

The General Industries Workers' Union of South Africa (GIWUSA) has condemned eMedia's planned retrenchment of 171 eNCA employees and called on the public to stand in solidarity with workers facing job losses through pickets, petitions and public campaigns.

The proposed job cuts form part of a Section 189 consultation process as eNCA restructures its newsroom into a smaller, digital-first operation.

GIWUSA President Mametlwe Sebei said the broadcaster's financial position did not justify the planned retrenchments.

"This is a story about choice – and eMedia has chosen profits over people."
