Nairobi Chief Officer for Environment Geoffrey Mosiria has called for casket businesses to relocate from areas immediately surrounding hospitals, arguing that their presence creates emotional distress for patients and families and sends the wrong message to people fighting for their lives.
Mosiria made the appeal after helping a bereaved family that had been struggling to settle a hospital bill and organize a dignified burial for their loved one.
According to Mosiria, the family had been overwhelmed by grief and financial hardship following the death of their relative. However, through the goodwill of the hospital management, the outstanding medical bill was waived, easing part of the family's burden.
He said further assistance came through the head of Sonko Rescue Team Mohammed Jawe who secured a donation of a casket from a local casket dealer. Before the donation could be delivered, however, another well-wisher had already provided the family with a coffin.
