India could unlock one of its biggest untapped employment engines by investing in the country's 43 million rural mini and nano enterprises, says The State of Rural Entrepreneurship in India 2026 report, released by Transform Rural India in collaboration with IDinsight.
The report comes at a crucial time as India seeks to create an estimated 7 million to 8 million jobs annually until 2036 to realise its Viksit Bharat vision.
While agriculture continues to employ nearly 46% of the country's workforce, it contributes only around one-fifth of the national income, underscoring the urgent need for alternative sources of rural employment.
Drawing on data from the Annual Survey of Unincorporated Sector Enterprises 2025, the report argues that India's rural non-farm economy presents a significant opportunity for job creation and income growth.
Rural monthly per capita consumption expenditure grew by 9.2% in 2023–24, outpacing the 8.3% increase in urban areas, signalling a rising demand that rural enterprises are well positioned to serve.
