Key Facts

—Project. Tía María is Southern Copper’s copper project in Peru’s Arequipa region, centred on the La Tapada open-pit deposit, with investment of about US$1.8 billion.

—Delay. The project has been blocked for roughly 15 years by local opposition, particularly from farmers in the Tambo valley concerned about water.

—Reversal. Peru declared the project of national interest on 1 April 2026, revoked the permit on 10 April and reauthorised the project later that month.
