LATROBE, Pa. — Steelers first-round pick Max Iheanachor’s strong start to training camp could be on pause.Early into Thursday’s padded practice Iheanachor was removed from a team period. Head athletic trainer Gabe Amponsah appeared to be examining the right tackle’s shoulder, chest or neck area. Iheanachor took off his helmet and watched an individual period before eventually walking off the field with another member of the Steelers’ medical staff. At this point, it’s unclear what type of injury Iheanachor may have sustained or how long it could keep him from the playing field. Coach Mike McCarthy, who speaks with the media before practices, is next scheduled to talk with reporters on Friday. When the Steelers drafted Iheanachor, the team talked about how Dylan Cook’s emergence gave them the opportunity to bring the rookie along slowly. Through two days in pads, Iheanachor was starting to change that conversation. He was one of the more impressive players on Monday and Tuesday, showing high-level athleticism, lateral agility and solid technique. He had several wins during one-on-one situations and was steady as a pass protector in team drills.“Everybody wants to see what their rookie’s doing in pads,” McCarthy said before practice. “He definitely passed that test.”Cook remains the starting right tackle. However, Iheanachor’s strong start to camp made it fair to wonder how long the depth chart would stay that way. Now, Iheanachor’s injury status adds another variable. How Iheanachor defied expectations to become the Steelers' No. 1 pick Mike DeFaboIn other injury news, defensive back Brandin Echols also left practice with what appeared to be a left ankle or calf injury. Because Jalen Ramsey began training camp on the PUP list, Echols was elevated into a first-team role at the “star” (nickel corner) position. With Echols out, Doneiko Slaughter got a promotion to the first-team defense.Broderick Jones struggles in one-on-onesWith Iheanachor out, Broderick Jones saw more time with the second-team offense at right tackle. It was a rough day. On the first rep of one-on-one drills, Jack Sawyer beat Jones quickly inside. Jones clapped his hands and shouted in frustration after the play. Later, Sawyer turned the corner on Jones for another clear win.Meanwhile, Nick Herbig has been asked to rush against center Zach Frazier on a number of one-on-one situations during camp as the Steelers work on ways to get the outside linebacker on the field more. Earlier this week, Herbig tried a spin move and Frazier laughed as he held him up with ease. On Thursday, Herbig tried to take on Frazier head-on and was taken to the ground.First (and second) real skirmish of campThe first full-length, padded practice of camp also came with the first real skirmish. Inside linebacker Patrick Queen and scrappy wide receiver Ben Skowronek were engaged after the whistle. Skowronek threw an open-handed punch to the side of Queen’s helmet. Payton Wilson came to his teammates’ defense, grabbing Skowronek by the collar and pulling him down.“We’re getting into the dog days at camp,” Wilson said. “People are tired. People are sore. We’re just competing. We love each other. Brothers fight all the time. Someone messes up, we get into it a little bit, but we’ll be in here eating lunch in 30 minutes.”
