The “green” in Avocado Green Mattress speaks to the brand’s core values of creating quality products made from organic and naturally sourced materials. Avocado is known for its commitment to sustainability and eco-friendliness, and the handcrafted Green Mattress has a list of certifications from GOLS and GOTS (both meaning organic) to Climate Neutral. Aside from these accolades, the mattress is also comfortable, versatile and accommodating. In this Avocado Green Mattress review, I summarize our testers’ experience with the mattress from all angles, including firmness, feel and motion isolation, and detail who this bed is best for and who may want something different. The Avocado Green Mattress comes in three firmness levels ranging from soft to firm, making it suitable for a variety of sleepers.ILLUSTRATION: FORBES / PHOTO: RETAILERThe Avocado Green comes in three different firmness options (plush, medium, firm). We put different models through group testing with the Forbes Vetted team and long-term testing in homes for 30 nights. That way, we could gain insight from the perspectives of different body sizes and sleep preferences, but also from a real-life setting. If you want a supportive mattress with ample cushion, responsiveness and multiple firmness options to choose from, the Avocado Green checks each one of those boxes—with an emphasis on the “green.” AvocadoForbes VettedForbes Vetted ratings are based on thorough evaluations by our editorial team to help you choose the best products with confidence.4.3Type: Hybrid | Avocado’s firmness rating: Plush (4), medium (6) or firm (7) | Trial period: 1 year | Warranty: 25 years | Height: 13 inches (plush), 11 inches (medium) or 11.5 inches (firm)Best for: Most sleeping positions due to different firmness optionsHot sleepersThose seeking an organic mattress Skip if:You want a contouring memory foam feelYou don’t want to pay more for a softer modelWant to read this story later?Get a link sent straight to your inbox. We've sent this story to your inbox. Our Initial Thoughts On The Avocado GreenThe Avocado Green’s eggshell-colored cover and grass-colored trim are the first telltale signs that this mattress is eco-friendly, but according to one tester, it feels as green as it looks. She claims, “This bed feels ‘green’ at the get-go (and not because it literally has green trim). I love the look and silky-soft feel of the cotton cover. I also appreciate that it smells more natural than some of the other mattresses I tested. I suffer from allergies and I can see how this mattress may be able to help ease some of those symptoms.” The Avocado Green Mattress in our testing studio.bridget chapman for forbesOff-gassing occurs with many bed-in-a-box mattresses once they’re opened from their packaging, but the Avocado has no chemical-like odor because of its natural and organic construction. For first impressions on feel, our testers had a general consensus that the firm model feels “supportive, firm and lifted.” Contrarily, the plush model feels much softer and offers more pressure relief, while the medium model sits on the fence between supportive and cushiony.Avocado Mattress Construction, Firmness And FeelSustainably Sourced Materials And A Premium DesignThe construction of your Avocado Green Mattress varies depending on the model you choose. The softer the mattress gets, the thicker the latex foam layers are; two of the three firmness levels feature a fluffy pillow top. All Avocado Green Mattresses, however, contain a blend of recycled-steel coils, organic latex, organic cotton and organic wool. For the plush model, the materials are:Cover: Global Organic Textile Standard- (GOTS) certified organic cottonBox pillow top layer: Three inches of FSC-certified Talalay latexComfort layer: Two inches of Global Organic Latex Standard- (GOLS) certified organic Dunlop latex, plus mohair, wool and silkSupport layer: Up to 1,459 recycled steel coils, individually pocketed with seven zones that are designed to be denser underneath the lumbar region and areas your body needs added supportBase layer: One inch of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latexFor the medium model, the materials are:Cover: GOTS-certified organic cottonPillow top layer: Two inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latexComfort layer: Two inches of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latexSupport layer: Up to 1,459 steel coils, individually encased in fabric pockets and arranged in multiple gauges and seven distinct zonesBase layer: One inch of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latexFor the firm model, the materials are:Cover: GOTS-certified organic cottonComfort layer: Two inches of GOTS-certified organic Dunlop latexSupport layer: Up to 1,459 steel coils, individually encased in fabric pockets and arranged in multiple gauges and seven distinct zonesBase layer: One inch of GOLS-certified organic Dunlop latexThe softer models of the Avocado Green contain more latex foam.ForbesDifferent Constructions Lead To Different FeelsIf you dislike the dense and doughy feel of memory foam, the responsive Avocado Green Mattress may be a pleasant change of pace. About the firm model, one tester says, “I don’t feel like I’m getting sucked into bed, and it’s springier [than memory foam].” Deputy sleep and wellness editor Bridget Chapman adds, “It’s firm with a dense, lifted feel. The thick cover has a touch of softness, but there’s no major contouring or pressure relief. It does feel quite supportive though.” With no pillow top and a thin latex foam layer, the firm model is the most supportive of the bunch. However, the medium model can accommodate more sleepers, as it offers more cushioning without lacking support. The plush model feels "extremely soft and has a cloudlike feel," according to one tester. She adds, “I found it uncomfortable to sleep on my back for too long on this mattress because it’s so soft.”The firm model of the Avocado Green is 11.5 inches tall. bridget chapman for forbesUltimately, our testing found the plush model is most comfortable for strict side sleepers, the medium model for side, back and combination sleepers, and the firm model is best for back and stomach sleepers. “While lying on my back, I feel aligned and supported," says one tester of the firm model. “I feel I am in a healthy alignment, and as someone who does have lower back pain concerns, I didn’t feel any pinching or sinkage that could trigger that discomfort.” Avocado agrees that the plush model is best for side sleepers and those in need of deep pressure relief. The brand says side, back and combination sleepers would do best on the medium model, and the firm model is recommended for back and stomach sleepers. Just keep in mind the models become more expensive the softer they get. Avocado Green Mattress Features A Durable And Naturally Cooling DesignSix testers put the Avocado Green Mattress through a series of performance tests to see which features stick out and where it may be lacking. Pressure ReliefThe firm model received a 6.5 score out of 10 in this category since it has a more lifted, supportive feel. In other words, there is almost no give around the joints, which is particularly unaccommodating for side sleepers. Those searching for a middle-of-the-road option for pressure relief should like the medium model. As for the plush version, which offers the most pressure relief of the three models, one of our testers who slept on it for two months says, “The box top feels like a very soft pillow top, which has a lot of give when you first lie down. I could lie on my side for quite a while without feeling any pressure on my shoulders.” Chapman, a dedicated side sleeper, echos similar thoughts after trying the softest model. “It has a soft, plush feel thats very responsive. It’s softer than a lot of other latex options out there without lacking support.”You can see how thick the pillow top is on the Avocado Green Mattress if you opt for the plush model.JAMIE UEDA FOR FORBESCoolingA long-term tester says she noticed some heat built up if she lay in one spot for a long time, but she “didn’t get overly hot,” and the heat dissipated quickly when she changed positions. She also says she slept comfortably through the night and didn’t wake up from being too hot (or cold). Latex foam is perforated throughout which promotes air circulation, while the material itself is good at preventing severe heat retention. Then, the coils in the bottom layer allow for air to pass through, making this mattress a viable option for those prone to sleeping hot. Motion TransferWhile the Avocado Green’s a responsive mattress that’s easy to move around on, it’s not the best at deadening movement. With that said, our testers didn’t think it was at the bottom of the barrel—just OK. After placing a glass of water near the edge of the mattress, one tester says, “I tossed and turned, got in and out of bed and even jumped into bed, and the water just wobbled in the glass. While it didn’t perform as well in this category as a memory foam bed like the Plank Firm, it did do better than the Saatva Classic.” Our long-term tester adds, “If your partner changes positions or moves around at night, you shouldn’t feel too much of the motion. However, if they get up and plop back down on the bed, you may feel some movement.”SupportAlthough it doesn’t shine for pressure relief, the firm model does offer great support for your body and spine. One tester says, “If someone is seeking a high-support mattress for their back [or stomach], this would be a great option.” Chapman adds, “It keeps my hips lifted and in line with my shoulders, while the latex and thick cover provide a gentle touch [while stomach sleeping]. I don’t feel any areas of pain or discomfort.” It also has a supportive perimeter, as Chapman rated the bed’s edge support a 9 out of 10. She says, “The coils don’t budge. I feel super supported [along the edge] as though I’m still in the middle of the mattress. I think you could easily sleep near the side of this bed.” The plush model also performed well during long-term testing: “The bed sank down when I sat on the edge, but I still felt supported due to the firm base underneath the plush layers," says our tester. “I didn’t feel like I was going to fall off.” The Avocado Mattress has a strong and supportive build that keeps your spine in proper alignment—especially the medium and firm models.JAMIE UEDA FOR FORBESEase Of MovementAs mentioned before, the bouncy nature of latex and innersprings make this mattress easy to move around on, as opposed to the resistance you may get when changing positions on a memory foam mattress. Testers scored this category an 8.5 out of 10, and Chapman says, “The latex is buoyant and helps guide you from position to position…. There's also not a lot of sinkage on this bed, so you never feel stuck in the bed and can easily roll around.” Avocado Green PricingAbout AvocadoIf you’ve done a fair share of mattress shopping, you may notice Avocado holds many more third-party certifications for its organic materials and sustainable practices than the vast majority of its competitors. The brand started in 2016 and says, “Our mission is to be the most respected source for organic mattresses, pillows and bedding at affordable prices—while maintaining environmentally conscious, ethical and sustainable business practices across our entire supply chain.” However, the Avocado brand is more than its environmentally friendly roots—and more than mattresses. Its products are made with premium materials, designed with quality and comfort in mind. I’ve tested a collection of Avocado products including bedding, a pillow and mattresses, and the brand has yet to let me down.Shipping And DeliveryAvocado offers standard free shipping or you can upgrade to white-glove delivery service, with or without removal of your old mattress, which costs $249. Trial Period And ReturnsAvocado offers a one-year trial with the purchase of an Avocado Green Mattress, but the brand requires that you sleep on the mattress for a minimum of 30 nights before you initiate a return. You are also subject to a $99 return fee.WarrantyThe Avocado Green Mattress has a 25-year limited warranty against defects and workmanship, and it’s at Avocado’s discretion as to whether they replace the mattress. There are also terms and conditions, such as original proof of purchase being required. In addition, there are terms that could void your warranty, such as abuse and mishandling, so make sure to read the details.Other Mattresses From AvocadoAvocado currently offers 16 mattresses, from crib mattresses to a full latex option. Below are two popular choices that feature latex and springs. Avocado Green MattressAvocado Eco Organic This is the brand’s entry-level model for those who want eco-friendly comfort and sustainability at a lower cost. The brand claims it falls around a medium on the firmness scale, but baby and kids gear editor Margaret Badore tested the mattress and says it has a firmer feel that’s best for back, stomach and combination sleepers. See more in our Avocado Eco Organic review. AvocadoAvocado Luxury Organic MattressThe Luxury Organic Mattress is the brand’s most premium choice and is thicker and softer than the Green or Eco models. It’s available in medium, plush and ultra plush. Avocado recommends the medium model for back and stomach sleepers; the plush model for side, back and combination sleepers; and the ultra plush for strict side sleepers.Final Thoughts About The Avocado Green MattressYou might be initially drawn to the Avocado Green Mattress because of its clean and eco-conscious design, but we think its comfortable and accommodating features also make it worth the splurge. Our testers gave the mattress a final score of 8.5 out of 10 because it hits the mark for so many different kinds of sleepers. “This mattress is very soft and plush, but I still find it keeps me supported. I think it’s a great pick for side sleepers in particular and those who prefers eco-friendly materials,” says Chapman.Who May Like It:The plush model is ideal for side sleepers who seek extra cushion as our tester found that it “offers a level of softness and pressure relief that many ‘soft’ mattresses from competitors don’t.” The medium model suits back, side and combination sleepers best, while the firm model should be reserved for certain back sleepers and stomach sleepers who require added support. Combination sleepers can also appreciate its responsive design that takes the effort out of switching positions. We also recommend it to hot sleepers who want a temperature-neutral mattress that doesn’t retain heat or cause night sweats, as its combination of materials makes it ultra breathable. Who May Not Like It:If you want a mattress that’s better at isolating motion from your partner, we recommend a memory foam option like the Nectar Premier. It also doesn’t have the strongest edge support for a hybrid mattress, especially the soft model, which may be important to couples or those with pain who need more structure to get in and out of bed.How We Tested The Avocado Green MattressWe tested the Avocado Green Mattress in a group setting made up of six team members who ranged from petite (under 150 pounds) to plus-size (250 pounds and up), where it was compared against 28 other mattresses. We also had a team member try the mattress in their own home for over 30 nights to gain a better understanding of how the mattress performs from day-to-day. Here are the primary features we analyze and how they are tested.Pressure ReliefWe determine a score for pressure relief by lying on the mattress in all sleeping positions: side, back and stomach. We pay attention to and take note of any pressure buildup that occurs, especially around our pressure points like shoulders and hips. If we feel discomfort while lying in a certain position, it is given a lower score.Motion IsolationOur group testers determine a score for motion isolation by placing a glass of water near the edge of a mattress and making jerky and assertive movements to see how much the glass (and water) jostles. Our long-term tester replaced the water glass with a real human and judged how many disturbances they felt through the night from their partner’s movements.SupportSimilar to pressure relief, we find the support of a mattress by lying in all three sleeping positions and taking note of spinal support. If a mattress lets our spine sag or not maintain a neutral alignment, it’s rated lower for support. We also test for edge support, and score it by lying down and sitting along the edge. Our testers lower the score when the bed excessively buckles under their weight. Ease Of Movement Our team members get in and out of bed and switch from their back, stomach and side to test resistance from the bed’s materials. The harder it is to change positions or move from one side to the other, the lower the score.
