How seasoned movers find savings in tax free shopping, preordering essentials and trimming surprises after the truck leaves.
Every Permanent Change of Station, or PCS, taught me something new about budgeting. Not because I got better at reading the regulations (I did) or memorized every reimbursement program. It was usually because I made a mistake, got surprised by an expense, or wondered, "How did we spend that much already?" And it never stopped. No matter how many PCS moves we completed, something always came up. Sometimes it was something major. Other times it was as simple as hunting down a pharmacy in the middle of the night in a brand-new town and buying every allergy medicine on the shelf because someone woke up miserable. Little expenses like that don't seem like much until you look back and realize they've been adding up for weeks. The military gives us checklists for just about everything. Budgeting advice is no different. Save your receipts. Track your mileage. Know your entitlements. Those things matter. But after moving more than once, I've learned that the biggest budget challenges aren't usually the ones on the official checklist. They're the little things that quietly add up while you're focused on getting your family from one duty station to the next. Those are the lessons I wish someone had shared with me.
