It is nine o’clock on Wednesday morning and the temperature in Budapest is 31°C. According to the forecast, it will reach 39°C in the afternoon. I am standing beneath Margaret Bridge, in a place I would not normally be able to reach with dry shoes.

I am not alone. The new “beach” on Margaret Island has quickly become an attraction. Parents with children, young runners, older residents and tourists all come here. Everyone wants a photograph of a sight nobody can remember seeing.
