Manchester City midfielder Nico Gonzalez says he has no intention of leaving the club this summer despite speculation around his future.Nico, 24, signed for City in January 2025 but sources around the Etihad Stadium had indicated that he could be set for a departure, having fallen out of favour during the second half of last season under former manager Pep Guardiola.City have been aiming to reinforce the midfield this summer, conscious that several players were likely to attract interest, including Rodri, Tijjani Reijnders and Mateo Kovacic, as well as Nico.Earlier this week, Kovacic told reporters that he is happy to stay at the club, and following City’s 3-1 friendly victory over K-League All Stars in Seoul, South Korea, on Wednesday, Nico also committed his future.“I’m happy here,” he said. “I don’t want to leave and I think the club wants me to stay. I haven’t seen anything, but I’m happy here.“I don’t think any player has the position guaranteed for all the matches. Everyone has to work hard. We are one of the best teams in the world and obviously there is competition in every position. That is what makes us be in the position that we are, winning so many Premier Leagues and competing for everything.”Nico was a mainstay in the City line-up in the first part of last season but was often left out after Rodri returned from his knee injury in the New Year, and when the Spain captain missed several games at the end of the campaign due to a groin strain, Nico was left out of the squad more often than he started, including the FA Cup final. He said that he has no issues with his game time, though, and instead focuses on the opportunities he did get, such as the FA Cup semi-final against Southampton, where he scored City’s winner.“I don’t think it was difficult for me,” Nico added. “When I play, I think I do a really good job. A good example was the semi-final of the FA Cup when I did a good match. Every chance I got I tried my best.“The final of the FA Cup, I was out but we won so it was an amazing day for me. If we win, I’m happy. My dream is to win trophies. If I don’t play any matches and we win the Champions League next year, I will be so happy.”City have also wrapped up contract talks with Jeremy Doku, with an announcement of a new deal, which will run until 2031 with an option for a further year, to come shortly. What next for City’s transfer business?News of Nico’s intention to stay means this has been a rather curious transfer window from City. Heading into the summer, multiple sources with knowledge of proceedings had been expecting one of their busiest summers in years, fuelled largely by a spate of departures, but as recently as this weekend, there has been some confusion as to when things will kick into action. So far this summer City have signed Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest for £116m and they are still pursuing other deals, but have been frustrated in their pursuit of certain targets. Some supporters have grown impatient with a perceived lack of action, which has perhaps not been helped by Arsenal’s move for Bruno Guimaraes and pursuit of Vinicius Junior.City say they are relaxed about their business so far, partly because they signed Marc Guehi and Antoine Semenyo in January, and also because they feel the squad is in a strong place. The intention heading into the summer was to ensure that Enzo Maresca will not be left wanting as he takes over from Guardiola, although the anticipated flurry of activity is still to happen.Anderson is City’s only senior signing of the summer so far (Darrian Traynor/Getty Images)Although Nico and Kovacic now seem set to stay at City, several players are still expected to leave, with Barcelona rivalling Real Madrid for Rodri, Reijnders attracting interest from Nottingham Forest, and Savinho in talks with Tottenham. That means that City’s business is far from over, as sources at the club insist that they are ready to replace any outgoings. That could mean that they sign another midfielder on top of Anderson and Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille, with talks progressing for the Morocco international. City had considered sending him back on loan for a season, but intend to bring him to keep him at the club if they can agree a deal with Lille.Sources at the club say that it is currently considered unlikely that they will sign a right-back, which had been a priority area, after being priced out of a move for Chelsea’s Malo Gusto. His team-mate, Pedro Neto, is of interest but those sources say that no approaches have been made to the Portugal international. A winger has also been considered a priority, with Savinho’s exit anticipated weeks ago.James Trafford’s move to Leeds for up to £45million is expected to be completed, with City aiming to sign Geronimo Rulli from Marseille to replace him.Director of football Hugo Viana is with the team in Seoul and is continuing to work on City’s transfer business ahead of the new season.Aug 6, 2026Connections: Sports EditionSpot the pattern.
