There are eight bank holidays every year for people living in England and Wales, often giving an extra day off work or time off in lieu.‌Most of those extra holidays have already gone in 2026 but there is one which comes on the last Monday in August. In 2026 it is a longer wait than usual as this year it falls on the last day of the month - Monday August 31.‌This means many people who get benefits which are due on a Monday will see their payments brought forward to Friday. This includes:‌Universal creditState pensionPension creditChild benefitDisability living allowance (DLA)Personal independence payment (PIP)Attendance allowanceCarer’s allowanceNorthern Ireland will also have a bank holiday on August 31. However, people in Scotland have already had their summer bank holiday on August 3.‌For England, Wales and Northern Ireland this is the last bank holiday before Christmas when there will be two more - including one "substitute" day. Christmas Day, December 25, and Boxing Day, December 26, are both bank holidays, but as December 26 is a Saturday, the bank holiday has been moved to Monday, December 28.While Scotland will also have these two days, people there have an additional one before the festive period.
