Lizzie's mother Sarah died when she was just three years old. Her father remarried, to Abby Durfee Gray three years after Sarah's death.In 1892, Lizzie was accused of murdering her father and stepmother. Andrew and Abby Borden were killed in 1892 when they were attacked with an axe in their home in Fall River, Massachusetts.The killings and following trial received widespread publicity in the United States at the time and are still a subject of debate and fascination to this day.It's reported that the entire household had been violently ill for several days before the murders. Abby apparently suspected someone was trying to poison her husband.Abby was attacked by her killer in the morning when she went upstairs to make the bed. She was struck multiple times as she lay on the floor before she died.Andrew arrived home a short time later that morning following his daily walk. It is believed he was attacked while he was asleep in a chair downstairs.Lizzie's sister Emma and the Borden's live-in maid were thought to also be present in the house at the time of the attacks. Ultimately, Lizzie was accused of both murders and went on trial.Another axe murder with eerie similarities occurred in the town just days before court proceedings began. According to some newspaper reports at the time, the jury acquitted Lizzie of both murders after just 40 minutes of deliberation.Netflix's upcoming series is not the first time the Borden murders will be portrayed on screen.
