PHILADELPHIA — When Andrew Painter threw a 3-2 fastball to Daylen Lile in the first inning Wednesday, he slipped during his delivery and grimaced as he felt it in his hamstring. Coaches checked in with him after each inning until the fourth, when he felt the hamstring tighten up on him.So he was pulled after four innings and 63 pitches, having just retired three consecutive batters for the first time all day.“I’m not too worried about it,” Painter said. “I felt like I could have gone out there and still competed. It is a risk the Phillies took when Monday’s trade deadline came and went without them acquiring another starter — despite seeking one in the hours leading up to the deadline, according to league sources who spoke anonymously to discuss private trade conversations.The search for starting pitching depth is a problem league-wide, sure. But the Phillies did not cultivate depth at the position in the offseason or at the trade deadline. The sixth man remains Alan Rangel, who produced a 5.75 ERA in 20 1/3 innings across five games in June and July. Then there is Brian Keller as the seventh man, a pitcher who signed a minor-league deal in May and went on to debut while pitching in bulk relief July 25. However, rather than have Keller pitch again, the Phillies called up Painter on Friday after two strong Triple-A starts.
